It’s been a great 12 months for Norwich City as they capped off a remarkable season with promotion from the Championship into the Premier League. Daniel Farke’s side beat Blackburn Rovers 2-1 at Carrow Road on Saturday to end their three-year absence from the top flight and will be crowned champions by avoiding defeat at Aston Villa on the final day.
The transformation from last season has been impressive. The Canaries finished 14th in 2017-18 and there were question marks surrounding Farke’s future at the club.
The rebuilding has gradually been taking place at Carrow Road since 2017 when Norwich managed to secure the services of Stuart Webber after he joined from Huddersfield Town. Webber joined as the club’s sporting director and instantly faced a battle to transform the club when they lost James Maddison, Nelson Oliveira and Josh Murphy last summer, they needed a strategy to produce a miracle.
Teemu Pukki, Emi Buendia and Moritz Leitner arrived last summer with little fuss but Pukki and Buendia have turned out to be two of the signings of the season in the Championship. They have 37 goals between them – eight more than Maddison, Oliveira and Murphy together.
Speaking to the press following the weekend’s game Webber stated ‘We inherited a ridiculous wage bill, a ridiculously-aged squad, a horrendous culture and that takes time to turn around,’ Webber said. ‘I feel like we’ve climbed Everest and we’ve got to the summit. We’ve got to try and get back down it now and re-climb it again. It’s not going to be easy, but it would be boring if it was easy.’
The recruitment of Webber has proven to be critical to the Canaries being back in the top flight of English football. His recruitment has been key and it shows just how the people behind the scenes are just as important to the success as the players on the pitch.
Stuart Webber will be delivering a keynote speech at our Recruitment In Sport Event where he will be discussing Norwich’s promotion campaign and how he needed to be savvy with his recruitment.
