Working With Professional Athletes Families

By January 29, 2018 No Comments

Lorna McClelland – one of the first Premier League Player Liaison Officers – will join a panel of experts at the upcoming Premier Sports Network Player Care Manchester event to discuss working with the families of sportspeople, often their closest and most important personal network.

Held on May 3rd at the Radisson Blu Edwardian hotel, Player Care Manchester will see professionals from the UK player support network converge to discuss a number of current challenges facing professional athletes and their advisors, and debate how best to overcome them.

McClelland was a PLO at Aston Villa from 2002 until 2016, having first been brought in by the late Graham Taylor. She set up the National Association of Players’ Welfare Officers and is now a Senior Consultant at GCSportsCare, which provides advice and support for sportspeople who are experiencing a range of problems such as depression, relationship problems and alcohol dependency.

On the Working with Families panel, McClelland will be joined by Christina Stanbridge (Managing Director at The London Nanny Company) and Tim Holmes (Player Welfare Manager at rugby league’s Widnes Vikings) to identify both the best ways families can support their sports-playing relatives, but also how other central parties in a sportsperson’s career – such as clubs and agents – should work with a star’s nearest and dearest.Panelists will also discuss working with and recruiting Host Families – typically based within short travelling distance from a team’s training base and providing a mix of short and long-term accommodation and guidance in life skills.
