Nigel Pearson, one of English football’s most respected managers, will provide a keynote presentation on the topic of ‘Player Care in the First-Team Environment’ during the Premier Sports Network Player Care Conference on October 11. Pearson, whose long and distinguished playing career as a defender featured spells with Sheffield Wednesday, Middlesbrough and Shrewsbury Town, has established a sterling reputation as one of the game’s leading managers since hanging up his boots in the late 1990s.

Pearson was famously at the helm for Leicester City’s ‘Great Escape’ when, during his second spell at the club and after he had led the team to promotion to the top division, an extraordinary run of results towards the end of the 2014-15 campaign ensured survival in the Premier League when relegation looked a certainty. His most recent post was at Championship club Derby County, while he has also been in charge of Hull City and Southampton since first entering the dugout with Carlisle United. He has additionally worked as a coach at a number of clubs, including Newcastle United and West Bromwich Albion, and served as assistant to England Under-21 team manager Stuart Pearce.

As a national coach for the Football Association, in addition to working with the England youth teams, Pearson also had a coach education role. Pearson’s presentation will touch on a number of key issues in relation to player care, including how to establish an effective support system within a club and the challenge of bringing youth team players up through the ranks into the first team.

Pearson will also discuss what he believes the role of the manager and club should be in relation to supporting players and their families, as well as how to manage issues surrounding religious and personal sensitivities, all in an attempt to forge a successful dressing room environment.

“As a manager, you want players to be available to play as much as possible. That is why the issue of player care should be an absolute priority,

– said Pearson, who will take questions from the audience after his presentation at the Conference.

Interest in the exclusive, invitation-only event at the Dorchester Collection Hotel in Mayfair is surging, with capacity already close to being reached due to a high number of sign-ups in the past two weeks.

Pearson will join a stellar line-up of speakers, including Conor McGregor’s agent, Audie Attar, Andre Collins, the Executive Director of the Professional Athletes Foundation, and Nyaka NiiLampti, Director of Player Wellness at the NFL Players’ Association. Unlike other industry gatherings, the Conference focuses on the specific issue of athlete care in an intimate environment, with dedicated networking time ensuring like-minded executives can delve deeper into discussing international best practice across a number of vital issues.
